Sad news for Sydneysiders, as the beloved music venue MoshPit Bar has announced it will be permanently closing its doors soon.

The news was confirmed on Monday (27 July), with the MoshPit Bar team revealing that the doors will shut on Saturday, 28 November.

Since its opening in 2016, the venue has been a launching pad for emerging heavy, punk, and alternative acts looking to perform in Sydney. In addition to live music, it’s also known for its $5 happy hour – something you don’t see very often.

Assuring punters that the decision hasn’t been made due to losing love for running the institution, it’s “quite the opposite,” owners explained that due to “ever-increasing operating costs, combined with declining revenues,” it has become “financially impossible” for the venue to stay open.

“We have explored every avenue available to keep MoshPit alive,” the venue’s team added. “We’ve looked at every option and exhausted every possibility to avoid this outcome. Sadly, despite our best efforts, the numbers no longer add up.”

In addition to sharing the reasons behind the venue’s closure, the MoshPit Bar team proved that they understand what the venue means to the local community.

“For every person who has walked through our doors over the last 9+ years, this venue has always been about far more than just a bar,” they wrote.

“It has been a place where friendships were made, unforgettable gigs were played, new bands found their first audience, and countless memories were created. None of that would have been possible without the amazing community that has supported us over the years.”

Venue operators went on to thank performers, customers, staff, sound engineers, bookers, and everyone else “who has played a part in the MoshPit story” over the last nine-plus years of operating.

“MoshPit has never just been a business to us—it has been our home, our passion, and a place built by an incredible community of people who love live music as much as we do,” the team’s statement continued. “Knowing that this chapter is coming to an end is something that brings us immense sadness.”

Despite the sadness, the venue will be celebrating its incredible legacy. “Until the day we close, we want to celebrate everything MoshPit has been,” the team shared.

“We’d love nothing more than to spend these final months surrounded by the people who made this place so special. Come and have a drink, catch a show, share your stories, and help us give MoshPit the farewell it deserves.”

The statement concluded, “From the bottom of our hearts, thank you - for every laugh, every song, every cheer from the crowd, and every moment you’ve shared with us.

“With love and endless gratitude, The MoshPit Team.”
