Kate Miller-Heidke is returning to her roots with her forthcoming album, The Kiss and The Abyss.

Her first full-length album since 2020’s Child in Reverse, Miller-Heidke hasn’t just announced the details of the record, but she’s also unveiled the first single, Holiday, and announced intimate album launch shows.

The Kiss and The Abyss will be released on Friday, 14 August, via EMI Music Australia. You can pre-order/pre-save the album here.

The Kiss and The Abyss was written with Miller-Heidke’s long-time collaborator, Keir Nuttall, and recorded with producer Tom Iansek in England. According to a press release, the album finds Miller-Heidke returning to her folk influences while also embracing darker textures and playing with theatrical storytelling.

Lead single Holiday is an offbeat, observational pop number that follows the relatable experience of putting too much pressure on a vacation or much-needed escape, only for it to unravel in front of you.

“It’s about needing a holiday so much that you sabotage your own holiday,” Miller-Heidke explained. “You anticipate it for months, and then somehow it all goes spectacularly wrong. I think everyone has experienced that.”

Acclaimed Australian filmmaker John Sheedy directed the music video, which features drag queens Serenity and Lazy Susan (winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under Season 4), alongside a colourful cast of characters.

To celebrate the release of The Kiss and The Abyss, Miller-Heidke will perform a series of intimate, exclusive album launch shows across Australia.

The tour begins on Saturday, 29 August, at Winter Sounds in Daylesford. It continues on Friday, 4 September, at Sydney’s Wharf 1 Theatre, followed by Friday, 11 September, at Perth’s Studio Underground, Wednesday, 16 September, at Melbourne’s Forum II, Friday, 18 September, at Adelaide’s Ukaria, and Friday, 25 September, at Brisbane’s Princess Theatre.
