Western Sydney rapper Hooligan Hefs, with his EDM-infused grooves, has just performed his first-ever Like A Version and appeared on camera with a band for the first time.

Not making things easy for himself, Hefs opted to cover a beloved song: Numb by nu-metal heroes Linkin Park. Recognised for its keyboard-led intro and noisy guitars, juxtaposed with a tender vocal delivery from Chester Bennington, you may be wondering: how did Hefs approach the song?

Yes, he rapped, but he brought his own bars to the song, foregoing the original verses for his own. Meanwhile, one of his bandmates sang the chorus through a vocoder. Shoutout to his bandmates, too, as they brought the track’s instrumentals to life.

Hefs discussed the song choice in an interview with triple j, revealing that Numb was one of his and his brother’s favourite songs growing up.

“It was one of me and my brother’s favourite songs back in the day,” he explained.

He continued, “We used to watch the live videos on MTV, and we’d just seen the vibe through the video. We’d seen how packed the crowd was, and we just seen how they were moving their heads to like, rap, right? They’re bouncing their heads on some rock stuff, to rap and rock.

“So, when we were watching it, I was thinking, ‘This is a moment,’ and that’s what life’s about. Moments, right?”

In addition to covering Numb, Hefs performed his track Sixth Sense. Check out the performances and the interview about his Like A Version below.

Last week (26 June), Hooligan Hefs unveiled his long-awaited debut album, Sixth Sense. “I’m just grateful to be able to still put out music after being here for so many years,” he told The Music in a recent interview. “Album this month? GTM.”

“This year has been my busiest yet, so it’s definitely brought new listeners.”
