Hockey Dad have cancelled their upcoming tour of the UK and Europe due to burnout and the “financial stress of touring.”

The Australian surf rock duo of Zach Stephenson and William Fleming made the devastating announcement on social media yesterday (10 February). The tour was set to begin on Friday, 7 March, at Badehaus in Berlin, Germany, and end on Sunday, 23 March, at Workmans in Dublin, Ireland.

While those dates have been cancelled, Hockey Dad assured their fans in New Zealand that their tour of Aotearoa will continue. Their current New Zealand tour ends on Saturday (15 February) at Totara St, Mt Maunganui. The band will then perform at Wollongong’s Yours & Owls Festival on Saturday, 1 March, and Sunday, 2 March.

“Hey everyone. Due to burnout and the ongoing financial stress of touring internationally, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to cancel our upcoming EU/UK tour,” the group wrote on Instagram.

“We’d like to apologise to all our EU/UK friends who had already purchased tickets, and our extended team who have worked on these shows. We love touring so much, and it’s been super hard for us to make this call.”

Adding that the last thing they want to do is disappoint fans, Hockey Dad promised to return to Europe and the UK as soon as possible. Fans will be able to access refunds from the point of purchase.

The band concluded, “NZ/Aotearoa don’t stress, we will still see you this week. Once we wrap this tour up, it’ll be time for us to hit the reset button and plan the next chapter for the band.”

Last June, Hockey Dad released their first album in four years, Rebuild Repeat, and toured across Australia with special guests Militarie Gun and The Belair Lip Bombs.

“This album, for me, feels like a fresh rebirth after a muddy, hazy couple of years for us and everyone else in the world,” Stephenson said last year.

“Rebuild Repeat as a title kind of describes the process of making a new record as a band. You only have yourselves as raw materials. You knock down what you had from the past, re-design, rebuild it and repeat. Hopefully, you learn some structural integrity tips along your way.”
