Crown And Anchor has been purchased by developers
Adelaide institution Crown And Anchor has long been a breeding ground for great original music and an ideal small room for touring artists, but its future as a live music space has been thrown into uncertainty, with the heritage-listed hotel being purchased by developers.
As Adelaide Now reports, the Grenfell Street mainstay was sold to developers Karidis Corporation in September, and while it seems the hotel will operate as usual for the foreseeable future, Karidis Corporation is developing apartments and office space adjacent the hotel.
The $50 million development will see a high-rise apartment next door to Crown And Anchor, but Adelaide City – who approved the project – will reportedly not support the demolition of the heritage-listed hotel.
Former Crown And Anchor owner Kevin Greg told Adelaide Now that running a live music venue next to apartments would be troublesome.

“Inevitably apartments are going to be built there,” Greg said.
“History tells us that it has always been difficult when you have residents living right alongside you — the operations of the hotel have to adapt. Particularly for a hotel that is truly a live music venue.”
Karidis Corporation is set to support Crown And Anchor with soundproof glass to prevent noise issues.
