Just weeks after the passing of Underground Lovers drummer Richard Andrew, a fundraiser has been set up to support his wife, Nicolette Powell.
The fundraiser was launched late last week with the goal “to support Nicolette in this incredibly challenging time”.
“Tragically, Nicolette’s hardships didn’t end with Richard’s passing,” the fundraiser. “She was already on carer’s leave, caring for her mum, who has a terminal brain tumour and has a very limited life expectancy. Now, Nicolette is facing the unimaginable task of grieving her husband while caring for her dying mother. Nicolette is dedicated to her work in palliative care, yet as you may imagine, in this line of work, returning to work right now simply isn’t an option.
“On top of this emotional toll, Nicolette faces an uncertain financial future. With Richard dying, she is suddenly down to one income and now faces immediate costs like mortgage payments, funeral expenses, and unexpected costs from their recent wedding, as well as necessary home repairs and car repairs,” it continues.
“She is also caring for an elderly dog who has athritis and a heart condition, as well as another dog and an ageing cat, a fish and chickens, who were a cherished part of life with Richard. There are always monthly veterinary bills.”
The fundraiser is aiming to raise $15,000 and at the time of writing, has already surpassed over $9,300 in donations.

Richard Andrew passed away on October 30th, with the musician’s family announcing the news with a statement on social media.
“His death, as he was in life, was epic,” the statement began. “He left this world, face to face with his wife, Nicolette, as she sang their song Do You Realise by The Flaming Lips. We are all heartbroken though relieve that our sweet prince is finally free.”
Richard Andrew joined Underground Lovers in the early days and was a band member from 1990 until 1994 before rejoining the group when they reunited in 2009. Alongside this, he also left his mark in bands such as Crow and Black Cab in addition to his own band Registered Nurse, his RJ Andrew solo project, and his work as founder of Phramacy Records.
Earlier this year, Underground Lovers celebrated the 30th anniversary of Dream It Down with tour dates in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. In February 2025, they’re set to tour with Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark (OMD) across the country.
