Hear the first song from Deadspace's upcoming split with Happy Days.
Arriving on September 30th via Talheim Records, 'Reaching For Silence' will be the massive new split between Perth's emotional, melodic black metallers Deadspace and American black metal crew, Happy Days.
While I cannot talk too much about the latter band, I am far more well versed in the music of the former. On these new recordings, WA's Deadspace took the opportunity to further experiment with the melodic envelope of their "trve" blackened sound; attempting to push the sound of their 2016 'Gravity' EP further by creating a wider sense of atmosphere with reverberant vocal and layered guitar melodies conveying both gripping melancholia and touching beauty. If 'Glass Houses', the very first track from their side is anything to on, then Deadspace have indeed done just that!
Unlike the four mammoth tunes found on last year's 'Gravity' or the material from 2015's 'The Promise Of Oblivion' LP, these new songs do not follow a strict concept or a rigid storyline. Each of these six new pieces will be their own entity; covering topics such as isolation, introspection, despair, autonomy, and nostalgia. Deadspace's side of this forthcoming split will also contain a re-structured recording of ‘Nostalgia, Like A Plague, She Rapes Me To Sleep’ (Jesus Christ, what a song name) with now the addition of guest vocals from Départe's Sam Dishington. One of the yet-to-be-released tracks, 'Flesh To Chew, Teeth To Swallow' features guest vocals from Rise Of Avernus's Mares Refalæða, with additional violins performed by Fiona Gebauer, a relation of the band's frontman, Chris Gebauer.
Now, it's unsure how much of the material from this Happy Days split release will appear on Deadspace's next full-length record, 'The Liquid Sky', which has only been slated for release in November. Either way, I'm just over the fucking moon that new music from Deadspace is on the way! And no, I will not be playing through Dead Space again for this split - I did that once, and once was enough.
