“For our eleventh chapter once more we’ll bathe the city in red and deliver two weeks of inspiring art, music and ritual," said Dark Mofo Artistic Director Chris Twite.

Tasmania’s Dark Mofo festival will be making a full return in 2025, one year after subverting a planned hiatus with a small-scale event.

In a press release issued today (Friday, November 1st), organsisers revealed that the midwinter solstice festival will make its return in June 2025, complete with an “ambitious art and music program”.

The return will also bring with it the standard Dark Mofo rituals Winter Feast, the Ogoh-Ogoh, Night Mass, and the Nude Solstice Swim. The event will take place from Thursday, June 5th to Sunday, June 15th, with the Swim scheduled for Saturday, June 21st.

“Dark Mofo is back,” said Artistic Director Chris Twite. “For our eleventh chapter once more we’ll bathe the city in red and deliver two weeks of inspiring art, music and ritual.

“Today we’re giving Dark Mofo devotees a chance to access a limited pre-release of tickets to the sprawling behemoth, Night Mass.”

Indeed, while the full festival program will be announced next year, organisers have however revealed that a limited pre-release of tickets to their Night Mass – an expansive art and music CBD take over – will go on sale from 10am on Tuesday, November 5th. Sales are only open to those who pre-register via the Dark Mofo website.

“Night Mass is a beast, and this year it will evolve once more; worming its way through the city with new spaces, performances and experiences to dance, explore or crawl your way through,” Twite said.

The return of Dark Mofo in full capacity is the latest in an unexpected series of events for the beloved festival.

In September 2023, organisers revealed that the festival would go on hiatus for its 2024 event, with a “period of renewal” instead to take place while organisers “take stock of changing conditions and rising costs”.

However, in April, the festival made a surprising comeback, with a smaller event being announced featuring the likes of Genesis Owusu and Marlon Williams.

“I know we said Dark Mofo would stay quiet, but Winter wouldn't feel the same without the chance to feast and frolic during the long Tasmanian nights,” Twite said at the time.

The full Dark Mofo 2025 lineup will be announced next year, though registration is available now to purchase tickets for their Night Mass.
