Bixler-Zavala formed the band in 2001 with bandmate Omar Rodríguez-López in the wake of At the Drive-In's disbandment. The Mars Volta announced a hiatus in September 2012, with Rodríguez-López wanting to concentrate on his new band, Bosnian Rainbows.
