LordeLorde has seen Spotify’s new AI feature, About the Song, and it’s fair to say that she isn’t a fan.
About the Song is a beta feature on Spotify that was released to a limited number of users in February. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the AI compiles information and context about artists’ songs from third-party sources.
Taking to her Instagram Stories, Lorde shared a screenshot of the AI feature’s blurb about her song, Current Affairs.
Drawing from The Music’s review from the Brisbane stop on her Ultrasound Tour, which mentioned the moment when a dancer pours water over the singer’s stomach, Lorde pointed out an inaccuracy in About the Song’s synopsis and argued that artists should have the ability to “opt out” of the feature.
“I’m going to go out on a limb and say we don’t want this,” Lorde wrote on Instagram.
She added, “Not only is this inaccurate (not the song i did that in) but reducing a song to an ai generated meaning right at the source feels like it limits free interpretation imo. At least make it possible for artists to opt out, please.”

In March, Lorde explained to fans that she was seeking a “clean slate” after her long-term contract with Universal Music Group expired late last year.
“The truth is that a 12-year-old girl pre-sold her creative output before she knew what it would be like and before she knew what she was signing away,” she explained.
“I’m sure I’ll have a deal again, could well be with Universal, but I knew that I needed to take a second to have nothing being bought or sold that comes from me.”
Lorde then discussed pursuing the opportunity to have a clean slate.

“I’m working and all this stuff, but it just feels exciting to have, I don’t know, remove the container for a second,” she said. “So yeah, newness is kind of a theme, a clean slate to open this newness. I don’t know if you saw my phone background that says, ‘I have no master.’ But I’m trying to feel what that feels like.”
Lorde released her fourth album through Universal, Virgin, in June 2025. She’s since embarked on an expansive Ultrasound World Tour, which visited Australia and New Zealand in February.
