The long-disbanded Toothfaeries - Brisbane’s iconic folk-punk band - are back, calling for fundraising amidst frontman Marcello Milani’s lung cancer diagnosis.
A GoFundMe has been organised by local singer-songwriter Deb Suckling, who is asking for donations from longstanding Toothfaeries fans, to support Milani (often referred to as ‘March’) and his family during his treatment.
“This call-out is very close to my heart as I am sure it will be for most of you,” Suckling wrote. “Like most of us 90s and naughties gang - Marcello and all the bands he performed in were some of the greatest nights of our lives.
“We danced, we made new friends, we celebrated Brisbane music together and Marcello has been at the deepest heart of creating what we all enjoy now. From hearing March onstage to him being behind the sound desk making us sound the best we can possibly be - with his never-ending smile and warmth. The 'faeries were always so generous, playing brilliant music and giving their time for free at benefits and weddings when people needed their help. And now March needs us.”'
As Milani is recovering from major surgery, and currently has an infection in his lungs, he can no longer work. And, though he is being supported by wife Paola Milani, she is also also caring daily for her mum, impacting her own work capacity. The GoFundMe aims to lessen this financial burden, and show Milani that the music community is behind him.

“I don't think he realizes how many people care about him and what he has done for us,” Suckling wrote. “Let him know how much his music and his voice have given to all of us - joy, positivity, purpose and the gift of looking at the bigger picture in life.
“We really want to help Marcello and his family receive support and to take as much stress out of the challenging months ahead. It is our time to nurture them with generous financial support. Please give what you can. All contributions are welcome and greatly appreciated. I hope you can help and send some of the love back to Marcello and his family at this challenging time.
“Please hold loving, healing and supportive thoughts for Marcello. We understand that these are difficult times and you may not be able to donate. But your thoughts are just as important to healing as money.”
Suckling also urges fans to get a health check themselves.
At the time of publication, the GoFundMe has raised $5,248 out of the $20,000 goal.
