After more than 40 years of serving drinks and dancefloor bangers, the beloved Brisbane institution, Fridays Riverside, is closing its doors.

The sad news was confirmed on the venue’s Instagram account on Monday (18 May). No reason for the closure was given, but over four decades of serving the community is a monumental achievement.

“After more than 40 years on the Brisbane riverfront, Fridays Riverside is saying goodbye,” the venue’s post began.

It continued, “Come down and enjoy one last Friday at Fridays, or make it a Sanctuary Saturday by the water. Either way, join us for a final drink, a final dance, and a proper farewell to one of Brisbane’s icons.”

Fridays Riverside is hosting its last day on Sunday, 24 May, so venue operators are encouraging punters to “come down and say goodbye before we close the doors.

“Let’s send off Fridays the way it deserves.”

One of the best-known riverside venues in Brisbane, Fridays Riverside opened in 1986 as part of the award-winning Riverside Centre, designed by Harry Seidler. The space has since received heritage listing.

The Brisbane Times notes that the riverside area around Eagle Street – where the nightclub is located – has undergone “significant” changes with the emergence of new projects, upgrades, and completions. A multi-billion-dollar redevelopment of Waterfront Place is also on the way.

Over on the Brisbane Reddit, punters are describing Fridays Riverside’s impending closure as the “end of an era” and reminiscing on decades of Happy Hour, particularly looking back on the early 2000s with fondness.

In a uniquely Australian post, an attendee remembered witnessing Olympic Gold medallist Steven Bradbury on the dancefloor, wearing his Gold medal.
