More Queen More Queen

They’re one of the most iconic rock bands of all time, and according to guitarist Brian May, there’s always a chance that new music from Queen could arrive.

In a new interview with Mojo, May reflected on the idea of whether the band could release new material under the Queen name at some point. “I think it could happen,” he explains.

“Both Roger [Taylor] and I are constantly writing and coming up with ideas and doing things in our studios,” he adds. “I could have the beginnings of a Queen song right there in front of me now. It’s just whether the idea reaches maturity or not. It’s whether that seed can grow.”

Officially, Queen haven’t released any ‘new’ material since the ‘90s, with vocalist Freddie Mercury passing in 1991. While the Made In Heaven record would arrive in 1995 as their final album, other unheard songs recorded with Mercury have been issued since, especially alongside archival reissues.

In 1997, bassist John Deacon departed the group, leaving only May and drummer Taylor as the remaining members. In the decades since, the band have performed with guest vocalists, including Paul Rodgers of Free, and Adam Lambert since 2011.

Just last year, Taylor hinted at new music from Queen, having previously claimed they had “dabbled” with new music involving Lambert.

“I think we might [record new material],'“ Taylor said. “Brian and myself were talking the other day, and we both said that if we feel we have some good material, why not? We can still play. We can still sing. So I don’t see why not.”

For his part, May has recently overcome a “health hiccup” which saw him suffer a minor stroke in September that left him unable to use one arm.

“The good news is that I can play guitar,” May told fans via Instagram. “It was in some doubt because that little health hiccup that I mentioned happened about a week ago, and what they called it was a minor stroke, and all of a sudden, out of the blue, I didn’t have any control over this arm, so it was a little scary.”

May added that he’s been resting and told he’s unable to drive or fly. He continued, “I really don’t want sympathy… Please don’t do that because it will clutter up my inbox, and I hate that.”
