We caught up with some of The BIGSOUND50 artists ahead of this year's conference to find out more about them. Here they share what music trends they think are dominating right now and their predictions for the coming year...

Boox Kid
First Nation and female artists are dominating the scene and rightfully so, with unique and lush production coming from all directions. I think for the future, female artists and First Nation Artists will continue to rise and their will be some really interesting collaborations to come.

Yirgjhilya
With the increase of online streaming gigs I believe it has given a more personal insight into an artists music, however I predict once we bounce back live gigs will be back busier than ever.

ASHWARYA
I think songs that have that TikTok groove to them or music that is super relatable to the struggles of 2020. For the coming year I feel like there's gonna be some feel good music trends that will hopefully kickstart a more positive year.

KYE
I think we're seeing a lot of genre bending at the moment which is really cool. So many unusual collaborations are happening and I think the coming year will see more of that.

I just really think everyone is getting sick of hearing the same things without any integrity. Next musical "trend" is going to be brutal honesty, no matter what the genre is of the music backing it.

What has been so reassuring about this year is how united and conscious the scenes around us in Melbourne have been. With so much down time, 2021 will be a beautiful opportunity to approach everything we do with a lot more purpose and awareness. Hopefully that will be a trend!

I'm not really sure what trends I would say are dominating right now but my predictions for the coming year is Australian hip hop will have a lot more eyes on it. The trend locally and nationally should be in building this scene!

Shannen James
I think melodic grooving baselines are a bit of a feature at the moment. I know I’m a fan of doing that and have done in lots of my songs. I also think the '80s influence is huge at the moment and will probably stick around for a while!

Oh gosh, I don't even know what the music trend for this year really is - is 'having guts' a trend because I think those who have been able to push through to the front this year are the ones who have just kept slogging it through the shit storm.

The Merindas
We see hip hop really trending at the moment, especially in our community. This is also backing the powerful movements on right now with Black Lives Matter and the Indigenous demand for justice. We can see this becoming big in the future with our next generation also.

Obviously this year has provided an opportunity for all areas of the industry to focus on their virtual presence, and I think even once we're fully open again we'll still see bands taking advantage of the opportunities for engagement that live streams and virtual events provide.

I think the DIY trend is pretty in right now, and has been for a while now too. Everything is a little un-predictable these days though, could not say what or what mightn’t be.

There's a lot of rich people making stupid music. The mainstream is full of it. It's a waste of time. I do see some good stuff on rage sometimes. There's a lot of good new bands coming up. Some new styles and sounds. Music should have a message.

I feel as if it's forever changing. I personally have been listening to a lot of instrumental hip hop/beats type stuff. Really dig the drumming base on those records, they seem to be pretty popular at the moment with more of it being produced, eg. Tulips by Frank Maston.

Noah Dillon
I think there’s seems to be an emphasis on personal songwriting and lyrics that hold up a story or emotion. I think in the coming years I could see the old singer songwriter model becoming more flexible and experimental with its instrumentation!

Hayley Marsten
I'm loving seeing so many entertainers, particularly women, finding their voice and speaking out about their experiences that they were probably taught not to make a fuss about, at least I was. I'm really excited to hear a whole new crop of incredibly empowered and honest music in coming years.

No Money Enterprise
For Australia, I think the whole hip hop/drill movement seems to be the current trend and I can only see it growing throughout the year.

Harper Bloom
I feel like there is a trend of blending completely different genres in a single song, which is really exciting. Also, it looks like TikTok is passively dominating music trends haha... So it's difficult to predict, as what goes viral on TikTok is completely unpredictable.

Indie has been dominating for some time now but over the last one-two years I've been seeing metal start to make a resurgence in the wider community. I think more people than ever will raise the horns in mosh pits over the next few years, practice those mosh moves!

Hauskey
Lo-fi bedroom pop is the biggest genre this year, hands down, but I think it's moving on. Not sure what will be "next", but good songs will be the winners regardless of the sounds that change around them. Either way, trends are overrated, and not really worth chasing.

Debbies (by Noah Egan)
Not 100% sure but it feels like psychedelic jazzy stuff like Sycco and BENEE is becoming really really popular and especially amongst women which is sick. It's such a great genre and it feels like it's only getting fresher, I think we will hear way more of it next year!
