It’s no secret that the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, loves music. But does that mean that we know which songs the PM has loved over the last year?
Posting on social media yesterday (5 December) on the day that Spotify Wrapped went live, Albanese shared his personal top five songs of the year. Clearly a fan of Australian indie and indie-rock music, his choices were all Aussie. Albanese’s top songs are:
Australia by G Flip, Letting Go by Angie McMahon, Still Have Room by Hockey Dad, Pedestal by Lime Cordiale, and Get Me Out by King Stingray. Albanese captioned the post, “What’s on your Spotify Wrapped?”
Albanese sharing his Spotify Wrapped is far from the first moment he’s repped Australian music.
Last February, Albanese gifted vinyl to New Zealand’s new Prime Minister, Chris Hipkins. Albo gifted Hipkins some of his favourite Aussie albums: When Rosie Met Monsters by Thelma Plum, Gang Of Youths’ The Positions, and How To Grow A Sunflower Underwater by Alex The Astronaut.

Last January, he shone the spotlight on Australian music with his 2023 triple j Hottest 100 picks.
Impressively, the Prime Minister’s list only featured one international act: Florence + The Machine, with the band’s hit Free. The rest of his choices were all Australian.
They were King Stingray's Camp Dog, Alex The Astronaut's Haircut, Quicksand by Hatchie, G Flip's GET ME OUTTA HERE, Stars In My Eyes by Ball Park Music, Spacey Jane's It's Been A Long Day, Thelma Plum's The Brown Snake, Colin by Lime Cordiale and Colin Hay, and in the wake of your leave by Gang Of Youths.
Earlier this year, Albanese made headlines when he crashed Blondie singer Debbie Harry’s interview on ABC Radio.
“G’day, Debbie. I’m a big fan, and it’s lovely to chat with you,” the PM said.
Harry, who was promoting Blondie’s stint in Australia for April’s Pandemonium Rocks Festival, greeted Albanese, who then said: “They said to me outside, ‘Oh, do you know you’re probably the only politician in Australia who’d be happy with being bumped for Debbie Harry?’
“I said, ‘Yeah, nah, absolutely fine!’ I’ve got some of the early albums on vinyl – Parallel Lines is my favourite.”
Harry responded, “Oh, good, thank you! This is such a surprise. Thank you so much. This is fabulous, and I can’t wait to get back there in April and come for a visit.”
Harry added that she hoped she could meet Albanese by referencing a Blondie classic: “I hope that I can meet you in the flesh,” she said.
“I’ll be hanging on the telephone for your call,” Albanese replied.
