What's It Like Working With Kanye West & Destiny's Child's Producer? Alice Ivy Knows

Alice Ivy's new single 'Sunrise' featuring Cadence Weapon is out now and to celebrate the release, the Melbourne songwriter took us into the LA studio where she's been writing and recording new music with Grammy Award-winning producer Andrew Dawson... here's what's been going on!

I spent a week mixing a few songs in LA back in February with Andrew Dawson. Dawson has worked on my favourite records of all time.

Believe it or not, this record was hanging above the toilet in the bathroom of the studio 'cause Dawson ran out of wall space.

As a producer, it’s pretty weird sitting on the couch at the back of the room and watching someone pull apart your session. But it was an incredible experience watching Dawson work his magic. I learnt sooo much and walked away with a heap of tricks!

Dawson’s space had several rooms. As we were mixing we were mainly in the monitoring room but attached to it was a massive tracking room with a bunch of synths and guitars. Pretty sure that Rhodes would have made it on a Kanye record.

Dawson engineered and mixed some of my favourite records including Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy which is that centre Grammy.

Cadence and I met at South by Southwest in Austin Texas last year and were totally keen on writing together. I hit him up a few months later on a writing trip to Toronto and we locked in a session. We worked out of Dan Kurtz of Dragonette’s home studio at his massive house in Toronto. Because Rollie is such a quick writer, we managed to get the song down in just a few hours.

This is a mad selfie I took in Dan Kurt’z studio. It was a neat little writing room.
