In the contemporary world of music it takes versatility, adaptability and creativity to carve out a career for oneself.

Charlotte Abroms has built this through genuine relationships with musicians, as well as establishing unique ways to showcase music. In 2025 she is set to add another layer to her repertoire through co-management, consultancy and hosting a singer-songwriter showcase.

And Abroms has been working in the music industry for what seems like eons, at least if her involvement is measured by the impact she has had and the artists she has guided. Her work as a freelance manager saw her represent the likes of Angie McMahon, Ainslie Wills, and Gretta Ray, assisting them in launching their musical careers.

She has worked in creative strategy in some of Australia’s most reputable creative agencies and she was the recipient of the Fast Track Fellowship, The Lighthouse Award, and Music Victoria’s Outstanding Woman in Music Award.

However, operating as a freelance manager while she was so young eventually led to her stepping away from the conventional management model altogether. What emerged was the opportunity to act as a consultant for artists from all around the world, an approach that sometimes involved ongoing work and at other times one-off consultations.

In this time, Abroms offered her expertise to the album campaigns of Ainslie Wills, Mia Dyson, Laura Marling, Susan O’Neill, and consulted with hundreds of local and international artists.

Creating opportunities for emerging artists to evolve from fledgling into full-form is her forte. It’s no wonder now that Abroms is returning to management to work with emerging lutruwita/Tasmanian singer-songwriter Rupert Bullard.

“Since I’ve been consulting with musicians, I have really learned to understand the challenges artists face,” says Abroms. “Which is what sparked the idea to develop a very artist-led management model."

Through the application of a new model Abroms is embarking on a unique co-management system with Bullard – a relationship built on creativity, mentorship, wellbeing, transparent communication, honesty and trust – an extension of what she has already applied and learned.

“Rupert and I feel establishing these values together means we can build a career that really fuels creativity, for both manager and artist,” says Abroms. “By making it co-management with the artist, Rupert can feel even more empowered to lead his career with my guidance.

It’s these values and modes of relationship that have resulted in Abroms having such a significant impact on so many artists careers, she truly believes in reciprocity and collaboration as well as fostering the emergence of young artists. She helps people to realise their potential and has the international networks to form strong bespoke teams around an artist.

To celebrate all this, especially the artists she works with in this newer style, Abroms has curated a unique show entitled Three Songs Each – a concert that will provide five singer-songwriters the opportunity to share three different songs, one performing after the other before cycling through the artists again.

This show is a project that one could only expect Abroms to bring to life.

“I love the nights that I walk away feeling inspired by a moment in a song,” she says. “I wanted to create a night like that.

“I love songs! I love hearing iPhone demos, I love when artists send me lyrics and I love hearing sketches of ideas develop into realised songs. Most of my consultations are through a screen on a video call, so I thought what better way to connect with the people I work with than to put them on a stage together in Naarm/Melbourne.”

The night will take over the famed Evelyn Hotel in Naarm/Melbourne on Sunday November 9 from 8pm, creating space for Abby Wallace, Caisha Sprout, Cooper Lower, Oscar O’Shea, and Bullard to perform.

The night has been pieced together by the belief in the calibre of the artists involved, in conjunction with the point they are at in their musical career. For some of them it will act as their first Naarm/Melbourne showcase.

Most of these artists are completely independent and Abroms hopes a night like this can afford them an opportunity to find their future teams.

“This showcase will celebrate this new consultancy model,” says Abroms. “A showcase of artists that I have been offering management consulting to. Because I know what’s going on behind the scenes for all of these artists, I know that they all have huge opportunities ahead.

“I hope this night can act as an opportunity to create real connections between songwriters, fans, and audience members alike.”

Each of the artists performing have been fast emerging in the world of music in their own unique way. For Wallace from lutruwita/Tasmania, a recent feature on triple j unearthed and supporting Thelma Plum has been a highlight.

Her journey has been moulded by the way music acts as “how I make sense of the world. It's the centre of everything."

And for Sprout and Lower, both hailing from VIC, the action of songwriting is an opportunity to ground oneself, as Lower says “[it’s] where I go to meet my most tender and fallible parts.” Both artists have been accumulating international attention too, with Sprout playing shows overseas and receiving radio plays in India, and Lower recording in Poland.

O’Shea and Bullard’s musical stories have centred around receiving praise for their respective EP releases – an experience that O’Shea was so close to losing, had it not been for a chance encounter in a local restaurant with famed producer John Castle.

The latter, Bullard, who was introduced to both Castle and Abroms after Wallace first saw him live, is preparing to support Mick Flannery and Susan O’Neill in the UK while he currently storms around Australia touring and winning awards, having already played over 100 shows at just 18 years old.

It’s this process for Bullard that affords him the “ability to express himself and connect with others.”

In its essence, Three Songs Each is the coalescence of all that is good about music, relationships, and how the right amount of support offered in a perfect moment can change the course of an artist’s life.

And so, Three Songs Each will celebrate the music and the process of each of these artists alongside the role that audiences play in the broader tapestry of music.

It’s herein that lies one of Abroms’ deepest sources of joy. The joy that comes from connecting people with each other, all the while nurturing the creative craft.

“I love to make introductions and help people find their people, point the songwriters in the right direction for help and support, and continue to learn about their innermost ideas,” she shares.

“My favourite thing about music is watching it performed live, in intimate and unique settings.”

It’s an exciting prospect to consider what a gig like this will offer the participating artists, as well as the crowd in attendance.

Abroms is especially excited about what the punters might be able to say at some point in the future – that is allowing for them to reflect and say, “I got to see these artists play The Evelyn back in 2025.”

It’s set to be an unforgettable concert celebrating the creative process and the many types of relationships that can contribute to it.

Three Songs Each will take place at The Evelyn Hotel on Sunday, November 9th, with tickets on sale now.
