Melbourne (Naarm) has received a brand spanking new recording studio (and “sonic sanctuary”), Dare Studios, headed up by industry stalwart Charlotte Abroms (best known for her work as a manager with Hear Hear Group) with a core focus on inclusivity and challenging the outdated “traditions” of the Australian music world.

Abroms is launching the space this week alongside renowned producer, mixer and audio engineer Jono Steer (whose portfolio includes work with Gretta Ray, Angie McMahon and Hiatus Kaiyote), with the pair having first linked up more than a decade ago. A press release declares that Dare Studios was founded to embody the pair’s “core values of respect, diversity, inclusion and kindness”, and was “meticulously designed to embody an environment of cleanliness and accessibility” that “places paramount importance on the artist and their craft”.

Abroms explained the concept in a short statement of her own: “If a person feels welcome, included and in control of their narrative, they can focus on making music they love.”

It certainly seems like she and Steer have created a space where that’s possible, with the latter adding to the sentiment: “The best thing about Dare Studios is that it feels like your own creative hideout. It’s unassuming, warm, welcoming, and feels like home.”

In addition to its state-of-the-art equipment and the unparalleled proficiency of its team (which also includes resident in-house engineers Julia Wallace and Connor Black-Harry), Dare Studios is being run with an emphasis on “education, collaboration, and connection above all else”. To embody this, the space will host a range of tailored workshops and events.

Dare Studios was soft-launched earlier this year, with sessions being laid down by the likes of Gretta Ray, Mia Dyson, Banjo Lucia and Merpire. But now it’s officially open for business with bookings available online offering dry hires, day passes, filmed sessions and more – head here for more info on all of that, as well as the chance to win a day in the studio with Steer.
