Lola YoungWith 2025 now in the immediate rearview, the time to reflect on the year that was has arrived, with music lovers the world over looking back at the tunes that shaped their previous calendar year.
For Australian music lovers, we've seen the likes of Spotify and Apple Music unveil their annual Wrapped and Replay lists, respectively. But for those not beholden to streaming services, what did the airwaves look like over the past 12 months?
Radio Monitor, which tracks the music played on radio and TV in over 120 countries, has released data on the top songs played on Australian radio this year.
The top song for the year might come as no surprise, with Lola Young's Messy taking out the #1 position, with fellow hitmakers Gracie Abrams and Alex Warren following closely behind with That's So True and Ordinary, respectively.

These top cuts make it a one-two punch for both the UK as a market, and Universal Music Group, while Warren's appearance, and both Disco Lines & Tinashe's No Broke Boys and Benson Boone's Sorry I'm Here For Someone Else, closing out the top five with three straight cuts for the USA and Warner Music Group.
Meanwhile, the top ten is rounded out by cuts from Justin Bieber; ROSÉ & Bruno Mars; Sonny Fodera, Jazzy & D.O.D; Chappell Roan; and CYRIL & Maryjo.
Universal ended up being the most successful label on the airwaves this year, boasting a 41.67% market share. Warner follows closely behind at 32.54%, and Sony sits in third place on 14.87%.
On the Australian front, Sonny Fodera's Somedays and CYRIL's Still Into You give locals their only representation in the top ten.
You have to head to #38 to find the second Aussie, with CYRIL again appearing with his There She Goes collab with MOONLGHT and The La's, while two tracks from Guy Sebastian appear at #41 and #5, The Kid LAROI's Girls sits at #47, and Tobiahs' Angel Of Mine rounding out the top 50.
Only 16% of the top 100 is made up of Aussie acts, but overall, the local representation shows a strong showing for indie talent. In fact, independent releases beat majors with a massive 47.38% share ahead of Sony at 23.67%, while Warner and Universal follow on 22.01% and 6.94%, respectively.
Notably, the charts also show a fondness for the past, too. 53% of the top 100 songs were released in 2025, while 2024 makes up 33% of the chart – including the top two tracks.
It's a big drop to the past from there. The 20 years between 2003 and 2023 make up 6%, while 1982 through to 1992 account for the remaining 8%.
It's a relatively similar story on the Aussie front. Of the top 100 locals in the full list (which span from #8 through to #693), releases from 2025 make up only 21%, while tracks from the 21st century tracks account for 49%. Of the top 20 Aussie cuts, only one is from before 2023, with Men At Work's 1982 favourite Down Under hiding at #105 in the overall list.
