APRA AMCOS has launched a brand-new documentary about its flagship songwriting and mentorship program, SongHubs. The documentary captures its sessions and impact in SongHubs: A Story On Collaboration.

The documentary celebrates the stories and experiences of songwriters and producers from Australia, New Zealand, and across the globe. It also celebrates eleven years of the program as this year marked its 100th session, featuring talented songwriters and producers such as Alice Ivy, Jordan Rakei, Telenova, Bic Runga, and many more.

Since its beginnings in 2013, SongHubs has offered opportunities for more than 2,000 emerging and established songwriters in over 30 global locations. It pairs said songwriters with local, national, and global creatives finding their feet, pairs of artists working together in a professional studio setting.

From a writing camp to a collaborative writing program, APRA AMCOS has consistently elevated SongHubs to the next level. Over 200 songs have been released through the program, and over $6 million in royalties have been earned.

You can watch the documentary below.

SongHubs will return this year and feature music professionals such as Chelsea Warner, Jordan Dozzi, and Alex Hope. You can find out more about this year’s program via the APRA AMCOS website and @SongHubs on Instagram.

Adam Townsend, Director of Writer Services at APRA AMCOS, said the program offers a “collaborative learning experience like no other.”

Of the documentary, Townsend added, “Being able to celebrate the story so far and the incredible success of songwriters who have taken part in the documentary is fantastic as we look forward to the future with the latest iterations of the event just announced, including Brisbane, Nashville and Sydney.”

In a statement, acclaimed singer-songwriter, producer, and documentary subject Jordan Rakei revealed that the collaborative spirit from SongHubs is embedded within his latest album, The Loop.

The Loop was a massive collaboration album,” Rakei explained. "That was actually inspired by my time with the cross-collaboration with APRA AMCOS and SongHubs. I can’t really do a solo album anymore; I just love collaborating.”

SongHubs has also led to the creation of bands, such as Telenova. “It’s really funny to think about what if we weren’t put in a room together, or I just wasn’t free the day that we were going to be doing a session, and then I met up with someone else,” said Telenova’s Angeline Armstrong. “I’m so glad that we did because I’m so proud of the music that we make.”

Alice Ivy added, “I feel like (with) collaboration, you're putting your best skills to the table, and the other person in the room or the other people in the room are putting their best skills to the table. You are making something so big and so special... and you can take those skills away and you can utilise them and use that in your practice in future years.”
