‘I Stay Out Of It. I Cook’: Even After 13 Years Between Albums, Coming Up With A Karnivool Setlist Remains Quite The Feat

Flying Lotus + TOKIMONSTA

FRIDAY 29 MAY 2026 | 6:00PM

What?

For over two decades, Los Angeles visionary Steve Ellison, better known as Flying Lotus (aka Captain Murphy) has reshaped contemporary music. Raised in a lineage that includes Alice Coltrane and Marilyn McLeod, he emerged from LA's Low End Theory scene with a sound fusing jazz, hip-hop, and electronic experimentation into something entirely his own. Through landmark releases on Warp Records, collaborations with Erykah Badu and David Lynch, production on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly, and the founding of Brainfeeder, home to Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, Hiatus Kaiyote, and George Clinton,  FlyLo has become one of the most important creative voices of the 21st century. His work now stretches into film and television, with projects including Ash, Netflix anime Yasuke, and the Spirit Box EP with Dawn Richard and Sid Sriram.

Joining him is TOKiMONSTA aka Jennifer Lee,  one of the most significant artists to come out of that same Brainfeeder world. A fellow Low End Theory regular, Lee was the first woman Flying Lotus ever signed to Brainfeeder, releasing her debut Midnight Menu in 2010. In 2015, she was diagnosed with Moyamoya disease, underwent two brain surgeries, and temporarily lost the ability to comprehend music. She rebuilt from zero, returning with the Grammy-nominated Lune Rouge in 2017, becoming the first female Asian-American producer nominated in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category, and releasing her most personal work yet, Eternal Reverie, in 2025. A DJ Mag Top 100 artist with over 400 million streams, she remains, in every sense, Brainfeeder through and through.

This is not a headliner-and-support arrangement. These are two architects of the same scene, the same LA streets, the same clubs, the same formative years, sharing a Melbourne stage together. Longtime friends of The Operatives, Flying Lotus first linked with the crew in 2006 and TOKiMONSTA just a few years later. This is a full-circle moment, 2 decades in the making. Expect the unexpected.
