Business/Position: Australia Council, Program Manager
Tell us about how you first became involved in the music business and where you are now? I got involved by gradual degrees over many years of recording, touring and music journalism. My first proper music business job was ten years ago, right here at the Australia Council, in 2005. I’m still here.
Is this your first WA Music Conference? No, I’ve been to a few now. My first time was long ago – maybe 2007? I’ve found that it’s good to start the day early, end late, don’t overdo the coffee, have a little power nap at about 3pm, and stay out of the sun. I’ve also found it’s good to leave space in your schedule for chance meetings.
What will you be primarily discussing during your appearance at the WA Music Conference, and why is this area important? I’ll be talking about grants at the Australia Council – how to apply, what makes a good application, and our new funding model for 2015.
What are you expecting to take away or experience from your WAM Festival visit? I always like to be blown away by at least one artist I’d never heard of. And if there’s any heavy metal, I’ll be there.
One piece of advice to help others succeed in the music industry? Diversify your income streams, maintain a sense of humour, and remember what got you into music in the first place.
