As an artist, what are you trying to do? Are you doing it? I’m trying to write good songs! That’s sort of it. The artists that I like are all very song and melody focussed, and I just want to be part of that long line of badassery.
How did you feel about your set on Thursday night? It went really well! When you only have 25 minutes, you kinda need to fit all your bangers in, so it was snappy and fun. I tried to get as many buddies as I could down to the show too, so there was a nice little vibe in the room.
What acts caught your ear/eye? The competition was really tough in this heat! It was Good Try’s first show ever, and they killed it; the Oakland guys were super melodic and energetic and Rag N Bone are so skilled and thoughtful that I had no idea who was gonna take it out.
Who else in The Big Splash heats are you keen to get a look at? Psychedelic Porn Crumpets, because how can you not want to find out what that’s all about? I’m also looking forward to enjoying the continuing story of Cool Band.
What are your plans, at this stage, for the rest of 2015? I’ve been given some money from the Department of Culture and the Arts to make my first album, so that’s what I’m devoting my energy towards for the rest of the year. I really hope it’s finished by Christmas.
The Big Splash continues with Heat #7 on Thursday, July 16, at The Odd Fellow with Flighflow, Couldbeat Jenako, The Southwicks and Visceral. Doors open 8pm, $6 entry.
