Stalwart Brissy five-piece The Jensens have returned with funky new single Emotion ahead of a show in their hometown this weekend.
Premiering on The Music today, Emotion sees the five-piece venture into psychedelic-tinged, experimental-pop territory amid the tune's innately danceable grooves, mixing in some extended instrumental passages, soulful falsetto, unexpected change-ups, bongo lines courtesy of Jack Hunter and even some seriously delightful wailing saxophone (from Julian Palma) for good measure.
This is a song whose ordinary run-time soars past the nine-and-a-half-minute mark, with its accompanying 'radio edit' struggling to get all that delicious meat in in under five-and-a-half. It's a total blast both ways, though.
Good thing, too, since the boys put a lot of work into it, mostly recording it in their home studio (with additioanl recording at Plutonium and Bedlam studios), as well as being largely self-produced and engineered (with assistance from Steve Kempnich).

"Emotion is about how everything is falsifiable," the band said in a statement. "You could put your trust in one thing today, and another tomorrow, and then in a year realise it was all a waste of time — but also how there’s really no such thing as wasting time.
"It’s about being entranced and obsessed, feeling unnatural and rejecting the soul in favour of an image. Fear that living life through a lens will cause emotions to fade and detract from what is essential."
Saturday's show at The Foundry — with The Ruminaters, Astro Travellers, M.C.K.C, Concrete Surfers, Romeo Moon and Pool Shop (holy heck, that is a good line-up) — marks the band's return to the live circuit after they took some time to retreat to the studio to craft their next chapter of songs. If Emotion is any indication, we're in for a heck of a ride now that they're back in the saddle.
Emotion is officially released this coming Monday, 26 June; see theGuide for more details about this weekend's show.
