Not Really About Adelaide Hills Or Cops

"I got drunk, watched a bunch of old Eddie Murphy films and applied to perform in this festival."

When asked to briefly describe his show, Gordon Southern says it's "a beautifully crafted narrative comedy saddled with the daft title of Adelaide Hills Cop 2". Why? "Because in December I got drunk, watched a bunch of old Eddie Murphy films and applied to perform in this festival.

"It's not much to do with the Adelaide Hills, or police work. Nor is it a sequel."

Southern realised he just had to become a comic when he was 20 years of age. "A friend asked me what I wanted out of life," he shares. "I told her I'd like her to laugh at the next thing I said. She laughed. Fate sealed." So is there anything that comics shouldn't joke about? "NO! If you're a smart comic you can joke about anything," he stresses. "I'm all for shining a light into the darkness. I also believe if you're good enough you can find original jokes in any subject." On scripting a comedy show, Southern believes, "Funny comes first, but I prefer shows that have a cohesive narrative too".

The British comedian will sport "a cool Letterman jacket" for Adelaide Hills Cop 2, but Southern's a bit worried about one of his props — "a pistol that looks so realistic I will struggle to travel with it through airport security for months to come". Melbourne is "a bit of a stunner", according to Southern. So where will we find him during his off-stage hours? "I love catching up with all my clown pals over dumplings," he offers.
