"How could you not 'get' Seinfeld?"
I find myself in a Brisbane hotel after a long flight from Perth, on the eve of our sold out performance at The Tivoli, one of my all time favourite Australian venues.
I am stretched out on the rather huge bed thinking about that Seinfeld episode where George says to the maid "That's one 'tuck' and one 'no tuck'." in reference to how he and Jerry would like their hotel beds prepared. I have a space in my memory set aside for a collection of the names of people who admit or even proudly declare that they do not 'get' Seinfeld. I think "How could you not 'get' Seinfeld?"
It reminds me of how Jerry's mum says to her son in some episode, I forget which, "How could anyone not like you?!" And I think, as I often do, what a genius comedy, to simply point out how ludicrous we are in our white, middle class existence, being all bothered and excited by mundane distractions. If we don't laugh.. Well, you know the other option.
I recline more into my comfortable bed and I laugh to myself. I am so delighted to be alive. I think I nearly died after Kiss My Apocalypse, you see? But I am alive now and so very aware of it. I am still processing the last few months, I think to myself. My infant nephew, who seemed on death's door to us all during a three week horror stint in Intensive Care a few months ago, has since turned one and I've never been happier than when I am sometimes invited by my brother and his partner to be involved in their daily baby bathing process. Perhaps my nephew's happiest time, he sits in his little tub while we pour warm water over his beautiful head.

He loves the warm water and his nakedness, to be unencumbered by nappies or clothes, he is truly free and delighted and I love to see him happy. I smile as I nearly fall asleep on the eve of the big show. But then my brain wires up again and I am feeling ready to kick ass on guitar for Peter tomorrow. But first I think I'm gonna watch some Seinfeld.. My brother gave me Stranger Things to watch on the plane but I am such a scaredy cat that even that brilliant show is too much for me when I am alone. Seinfeld it is. I very much enjoy touring and hotels.
P.S. I'll still be your friend if you don't 'get' Seinfeld.. I just don't quite 'get' how you couldn't 'get' it.
