Chris Familton, Journalist

Chris Familton

I'm a music journalist, publicist and musician. I’ve been writing professionally about music for the last 15 years, with my music blogs Doubtful Sounds and Post To Wire (alt-country/folk) and as a freelancer with The Music (Drum Media) since 2009, Rhythms magazine, FasterLouder and more.

I've been playing bass guitar in bands since the early ‘90s in New Zealand (Thorazine Shuffle) and Australia (The Finalists, Charlie Horse). I currently also work as a music publicist, with artists including Bluebottle Kiss, Halfway, Restless Leg, Alannah Russack.

Live Review: John Grant, John Murry, Darren Sylvester

Live Review: The War On Drugs, Day Ravies
As a band they sounded effortless yet sonically bold and muscular, like a plane cruising at 30,000 feet. An early highlight for 2014.

Live Review: Johnny Marr, Jep & Dep
This was a man honouring his legacy while still creating in the present. As the T-shirts at the merchandise desk defiantly proclaimed... Johnny Fuckin Marr.

Live Review: Bombino
There was just the right mix of funk, rock and though few if any knew the meaning of Moctar’s lyrics there was an innate soulfulness to his singing that transcended translation.

Album Review: Rosanne Cash - The River And The Thread
Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Tony Joe White appear as guests, but the album’s success is wholly that of Cash and husband/co-writer John Leventhal.

Live Review: Earthless, The Shrine, Elysium Eternal
Riveting, absorbing and totally immersive, Earthless took psych-rock to its logical and hypnotic extremes.

Live Review: Dale Watson & His Lonestars, The Detonators, Johnny Green
Fuelled by constant rounds of tequila shots from the audience the band celebrated their final tour show with 90 minutes of music devoid of pretension and high on honest, good times country rock’n’roll.

Album Review: Cate Le Bon - Mug Museum
Le Bon’s voice is less folk and more icy chanteuse with austere Nico-like intonements, making it equally annoying and charming.

Live Review: Robert Ellis, Cory Chisel, Marlon Williams
Covers of songs by Norman Blake, Paul Simon and Deer Tick’s John McCauley plus Sing Along and TV Song from Ellis’ forthcoming LP rounded out what was often an extraordinary night of acoustic Americana music.

Live Review: Sonny & The Sunsets, Surf City, Community Radio, Adults
This was a set of songs that sounded otherworldly and familiar, simple yet quirky, all at the same time.
