Chris Familton, Journalist

Chris Familton

I'm a music journalist, publicist and musician. I’ve been writing professionally about music for the last 15 years, with my music blogs Doubtful Sounds and Post To Wire (alt-country/folk) and as a freelancer with The Music (Drum Media) since 2009, Rhythms magazine, FasterLouder and more.

I've been playing bass guitar in bands since the early ‘90s in New Zealand (Thorazine Shuffle) and Australia (The Finalists, Charlie Horse). I currently also work as a music publicist, with artists including Bluebottle Kiss, Halfway, Restless Leg, Alannah Russack.

Album Review: Luka Bloom - Head And Heart
"The Irish folk singer returns with songs that are noteworthy for their skeletal, laid-bare arrangements"

Live Review: Dr John & the nitetrippers, Aaron Neville
There was no Hercules, no doubt a big disappointment for many, but Neville showed what a magical voice he still has and how effectively he can apply it to a range of timeless classic songs.

Album Review: The Morrisons - Hard Hoarse
Hard Hoarse is all about girls, cops, staying young and drugs with suitably clichéd lyrics which, combined with the stock-standard riffs and chanted choruses, make for a pretty forgettable album.

Live Review: Trixie Whitle
"Whitley was able to create some wonderfully hypnotic music"

Album Review: Grayson Gilmour - Infinite Life!
Modern contemporaries like Animal Collective and Radiohead may lay claim to these paths yet Gilmour is negotiating his own bold and elaborate route through similar territory.

Album Review: Rodney Crowell - Tarpaper Sky
This is an album without pretense, simply well crafted and expertly recorded country songs.

Live Review: Sunnyboys, The Stems, The Frowning Clouds
This was a triumphant night built partly on nostalgia but overwhelmingly on clever and emotionally connective guitar-pop songs.

Album Review: Infinity Broke - River Mirrors
River Mirrors takes many twists and turns, such as the meditative Necks-ish mood on Termites (a reimagined version of a BBK song), the swaggering vigour of Swing A Kitten, the krautrock repetition/release that is Monsoon and the Sonic-Youth-does-Motown shuffling groove of Gallows Queue.
