It’s a shame that Minaj can’t successfully balance her gritty rap side with her pop persona, as at her best tonight – such as during the fearsome rendition of her verse from Kanye West’s Monster – she’s an arresting and imposing presence.

The best performance of the day was, however, without a shadow of a doubt, given by the unbelievably enigmatic and immeasurably talented Kimbra. One of the highlights of the set was her performance of Two Way Street, where she displayed her incredible ability to sing, dance and play complex tambourine rhythms simultaneously.

Bobby Gillespie hardly broke a sweat, even during energetic closer Rocks, as he twisted his body around the stage and stared blankly at fans with a confidence that let them do the hard rocking for him.

A unique wall of death for uproarious 'I Got Erection' concluded matters appropriately and reinforced that hopefully the local chapter won’t have to leave their Scandinavian leathers in the closet for quite so long next time.

It’s 1am, but the band – and most of the faithful – are buzzing. It’s quite a show of strength from a band that can sometimes appear so fragile.

Us and Fidelity had more than a few voices singing along, but it was Samson that stole the show – Spektor alone, with the piano, was the most beautiful and moving moment of the night.

Hell, you know you’ve done a good job when you can get the hipsters in the crowd to dance. Four Tet was utterly amazing.
