This album just needs that one fantastic song to push it over the edge. It’s a common expression amongst optimists rationalising their investment in a mostly middling record.
This record by White Shadows, featuring Vines and Empire Of The Sun members, opens itself up to this conceit. The pulsing ‘80s synth and Beatlesque guitar jangle of late gem, I Belong To You, elevates the entire record, but doesn’t quite push it into the stratosphere beyond obvious influences, Tame Impala and Passion Pit, whose masterful ability to romanticise the quotidian is often honoured, rarely matched.
