Fresh Finds: Class Of 2025 – Aussie Acts To Add To Your Playlist

Live Review: The Vengaboys & DJ DTuck

There’s definitely still plenty of life left in the Vengabus, and they’ll be generating sell-out crowds for as long as they continue to play.

Having sold out all their shows across the nation this time last year, it's a little difficult to dispute the Vengaboys' desire to travel halfway around the world to do it all again. It was hard not to be cynical though; I mean, last year it was a pretty big deal – no one had heard anything from the most influential Euro-pop group of the '90s since ... well, the '90s, but all of a sudden they were here, touring - would people really care about seeing them a second time 'round? You bet they would. Getting to the venue at the opening time of 8pm was a mistake, as the line was already devastatingly long.

We got through the doors half an hour later, and curiously, the promoted support act Twenty4Seven was nowhere to be seen. Instead, DJ DTuck played an absolute corker of a set filled with classic '90s tunes and nobody was afraid to show they loved every single second of it. The crowd was ecstatic with nostalgia as the resident DJ blasted power hits from S Club 7, The Backstreet Boys and Eiffel 65, as well as busting out a Grease melody before it was time for the main act to grace the stage.

The Vengaboys' entrance was met with an ear-splitting cheer, taking to the stage dressed in costumes screaming glitter, complete with pink stockings and cowboy hats. It hindsight, one would find it easy to tear the show to shreds - the foursome essentially lip-synced their entire set and their choreography was too average for a band of their calibre, but really, nobody's there to marvel at the band's vocal talents. The novelty value was fantastic; the group opening with a “Ho Ho Vengaboys” melody and then proceeding to play all their biggest hits. We Like To Party was met with a deafening roar, and We're Going to Ibiza had the audience in a dancing frenzy. Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom! was played twice for good measure, and by the end of the set, not a single person was left without a grin on their face from ear to ear. There's definitely still plenty of life left in the Vengabus, and they'll be generating sell-out crowds for as long as they continue to play.
