Album Review: The Phoncurves - Heartstrings

Despite its references to love, Heartstrings maintains a sweet innocence.

Aside from the occasional scat, these soulful Brisbanites prove an amicable pair. Backed by faint instrumental support, this earthy EP centres around the duo's wistful harmonies. The jazzy Motionless is more of a slow burn while Jumble offers a ho-hum melody disguised as a brooding ballad. Despite its references to love, Heartstrings maintains a sweet innocence. Some lyrics equal the wholesomeness of a Christmas album (“I don't know many things/But I know it when my heart sings”), while more river-centric stories would sound at home in a hippie commune. They play at Boney on 6 Jun.
