Stand AtlanticSoaring melodies and pounding drum lines surround Sydney pop-punk trio Stand Atlantic’s debut album, Skinny Dipping.
What hits you first is the incredible vocal tone of singer Bonnie Fraser; her grit and power breaks through the poppy melodies and adds a rough and tough undertone, giving the album its punch. Written about putting yourself second and suppressing your feelings, opening single Lavender Bones doesn’t hold back with its anthemic, hard-hitting chorus, setting the energetic tone for the rest of the album to play off.
Stand Atlantic deliver fast-paced, summery pop-punk with attitude in songs Speak Slow and Lost My Cool, but when ballad Toothpick hits, it’s a shock to the system. Slowly plucked guitars and a rising string section wash over the track as Fraser showcases her softer side, taking time with each note; a deep breath providing time to stop and just listen.
A cheeky feature by UK rock band Creeper’s Hannah Hermione Greenwood in Clay is a brutal collaboration with both vocalists bringing fire and flare. As we end on the emotionally gripping Roses, it's a poetic finale to an upbeat summer album full of poise, honesty and self-reflection.
