Album Review: Marcus Marr & Chet Faker - Work

StarStarStarHalf Star

"There's an atmosphere of confusion and displacement throughout the record."

London producer Marcus Marr teams up with Melbourne electronica singer-songwriter Chet Faker on this collaborative release for a selection of moody and pulsating dance music.

There's an atmosphere of confusion and displacement throughout the record, as Faker sings pleading lines like, "I don't know where I stand," on Birthday Card. While he may be feeling a little lost, the underlying music from Marr fits the tone perfectly. Even the verses of The Trouble With Us, the most upbeat track here, are made to float in an ether of murky guitar notes while the beat holds off until the pre-chorus. The sequencing of this release is further outstanding, making for another refreshing release.
