Songs about beaches are always great. Everyone loves the beach, right? The Beach Boys cottoned onto this a long while back. WILL JOSEPH COOK obviously likes the beach too.
Although his new song ‘Beach’ doesn’t actually feature the word beach in the lyrics at any point, it’s clear that this is the overriding ambit for the track – it should be played whilst driving to the beach, whilst having a bbq and a surf at the beach and whilst heading home after a sun-filled day at the beach.
Just back from playing Glastonbury, the clean-cut boy from Kent, aka ‘the garden of England’, has an ear for feel good indie pop. There are hints of folk, blues and acoustic surfer guitar that nestle in this cheesy easy breezy summertime song.
Like his previous EP, You Jump I Run, the lead single for the upcoming Proof Enough EP is built around strong pop hooks. Jumpy, staccato guitar riffs and a stuttered drum beat in the verse gives way to the chorus’ legato exuberant celebration of young love. It’s full of the carefree whimsies of youth, as Cook declares that "I want to make you mine / I can’t seem to love another". You’ll be singing along with the rom-com-ready chords by the second chorus.

The song is a little cheesy, but it’s not dumb. It’s clever and catchy and I’ve played it five times already this morning and now I’m in a really good mood.
Proof Enough is due to drop on August 14th via Atlantic Records.
