Hold My Breath is the new four track EP from Brisbane trio MTNS, shaping up to be their most mature body of work to date. It was recorded over in LA, an experience describes by MTNS’ member Tom Eggert as a lot of fun, as the group was “experimenting with new approaches to music and styles”. Evidently, these experimentations have worked out for the best, as the resulting product is a euphoric soundscape blending slippery synths with oscillations and echoing vocals.
Earlier this year, the trio released a taste of the EP with first single (and second track) ‘Two Rivers’, where emotive, vaporous vocals are cocooned in a highly detailed work of electronic production where oscillations churn together like cogs in clockwork. Sharp and muted tones are balanced to great effect across all four tracks, a signature of MTNS’ skilful work that makes a song sharp and muted all at once. It’s kind of like the aural representation of a sharp corner covered in velvet or zingy-sweet lemon sorbet; intense but moreish.

The title track for the EP ‘Hold My Breath’, is a tune about releasing inhibitions and going with the flow of life, a message that is mirrored sonically with tempo changes and contrasting instrumentals. It seems to serve as an extended metaphor for MTNS themselves, as the trio found success very early on when their debut single ‘Lost In Time’ charted at number one on Hype Machine, gaining the group high rotation on Triple J and a Spotify catalogue boasting over ten million plays.

Hold My Breath is a short EP that is worth the listen from beginning to end, as it tells the story of MTNS to date and plants the seed of excitement for things to come from this skilled Brisbane trio. It’s an incredible end to the year and surely an achievement for these artists to have created a sound so emotive and opulent.
