Live Review: PREMIERE: Kraznov delivers a bass-heavy remix of May Lyn's 'Soldiers'

After the release of her hugely impressive Vessels EP earlier this year, MAY LYN is doing anything but slowing down. Just a few days before she supports the remarkable LUCIANBLOMKAMP on the Brisbane leg of his show, she's now dropped a brand new remix of her stand out track, 'Soldiers', courtesy of fellow Brisbanite, KRAZNOV.

What was a glitchy, powerful and politically motivated tune has been stripped down and built back up with some trap influences to create a version of May Lyn we've not heard before. With May Lyn's ethereal vocals now spliced and sampled, Kraznov harnesses the tension in the original and further amplifies this with his eerie synths and booming bass kicks. Clocking at just under 3 minutes, it's a short and sweet shake up of 'Soldiers', with Kraznov opting for a "less is more" approach and it working to his advantage.

Allowing his layers to breathe and move on their own, his bass-infused banger is a writhing bed of sparse sounds that are perfectly paired with May Lyn's soft voice, while still retaining the core message of the track which "addresses the ideology of nationalism and how it can create cultural separation among societies."

I'm seriously convinced there is something in the water in Brisbane at the moment, as the city's music scene continues to go through a renaissance of hip-hop, soul, RnB, dance and more. With each artist not afraid to collaborate with each other as well to bring out new possibilities of what they can achieve, this remix is just another example of the potential of this new crop of Brisbane artists, and two very exciting ones at that.
