Lessons With Luis

At some points laughing at him was uncomfortable, but his silent brother Luelin provided grounding and deadpan relief.

This year's Raw Comedy winners, who also took out the Golden Gibbo at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival confess to just being glad that we came to their show. Luis personally thanked every audience member handing us a balloon to say thank you. The tone of this show is impossible to shake, and Luis' awkward but sincere enthusiasm is infectious. With the aid of his nice family, Len (dad) and Luelin (brother), Luis took us on an adventure to Kidney Kingdom to find Len a new kidney. A stage cluttered with cardboard props, trampolines and A2 painted backdrops may not sound appealing at first, but these suburban dags make their world believable. From a cat fighting off a pond-shark, to anatomy lessons, tasting the moon and the most hilarious three-man wrestle. This is a polished piece of faux-amateurism – a difficult comedic style to pull off, but they nailed it. Luis is an odd but earnest and really, really loves cats. At some points laughing at him was uncomfortable, but his silent brother Luelin provided grounding and deadpan relief. Luis and his family might just be so square that they're hip.

Running at the Lithuanian Club until Friday 5 October
