A killer melting pot of influences from each member.
The wait for the debut album from supergroup, Killer Be Killed, which includes Max Cavalera (Soulfly), Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan), Troy Sanders (Mastodon), and Dave Elitch (ex-The Mars Volta), has been an anticipated one for metal fans. Thankfully, their new self-titled album brings it home, proving to be worth the build-up and expectation.
The combination of such influences that form these "supergroups" can often be tricky to construct, but Killer Be Killed have managed to make something infectious and really interesting to listen to with diverse sounds coming from each member.
The album moves from hardcore to thrash and metal with some nice melodic choruses in-between. Beginning with notable hardcore elements on ‘Wings of Feather and Wax’ vocal hooks headline the track before the band shows us some more thrash influences in ‘Face Down.’ Heavier songs like ‘Snakes of Jehova’ add some punch to the record, showcasing the powerful vocals and fast, intense guitar work.
The full-length chops and changes rapidly with its sounds. What these different influences provide is an album with no two songs that are really the same. This chopping and changing surprisingly manages to work really well to keep the 11-track offering exciting. The use of vocals from each member also gives it a really interesting sound as we move from catchy, melodic vocals to gritty and growling metal screams.
All this workds to provide a great combination of all the influences from each member, definitely an experiment that has gone right in all respects. It’s heavy, catchy and has elements of each member’s other band to appeal to their fan bases.
Killer Be Killed have started off their legacy with a really strong album. With so many different styles and sounds coming together they have managed to create something with a streak of originality.
