"The 90-minute set seemed to end sooner than expected but not before a slew of hits rounded off the show."
Having cancelled his August dates due to illness, it was definitely worth the wait for Aussie icon James Reyne. He's a man that could probably tour every week and sell out shows Australia wide. Oh, and Brazil; apparently he's big in that part of South America too.
Reyne entered stage left looking like he'd just come off a golf course - smart checkered slacks and a polo shirt. Then, that distinctive voice, as the band kicked into lesser-known Australian Crawl track Daughters Of The Northern Coast. People have taken the proverbial you know what out of his vocal style for years, basically you either love him or hate him. Two sold out shows prove the love here is strong.
By the third track, the hits started to flow. The opening chords to Beautiful People bled out of the speakers to a huge cheer from the mainly middle-aged crowd. Lakeside was next up. It's a perfect crowd pleaser and the chorus - "Lakeside" sung three times in a row - demanded the room to sing it back to the band. Reyne grinned happily in response.
The concert is dubbed 'All Crawl', meaning Reyne and his gang are going to play only Australian Crawl songs - it was such a huge hit in 2014 that he thought he'd get the band back on the road again - so it was much to the crowd's surprise to hear some solo career tracks. Slave, Hammerhead and Motor's Too Fast were littered throughout the set much to the delight of the crowd.

Australian Crawl songs are engrained into Australian classic rock history. Even non-fans will know a track or three without realising. One of them will be the heartfelt ballad Reckless. It's equivalent to the Hunters & Collectors' Throw Your Arms Around Me or INXS' Never Tear Us Apart. All staples on classic rock stations around Australia and you can't help but sing along. Kudos to the lighting person who turned the lights down to a sultry red hue, which perfectly suited the mood of the song.
Such is the depth of the Aussie Crawl catalogue that a rare B-side got a look-in. Country-tinged Man Crazy, the flipside to Beautiful People, wowed the crowd, some even knowing the lyrics to this rare gem.
The 90-minute set seemed to end sooner than expected but not before a slew of hits rounded off the show. Oh No Not You Again, Errol, Things Don't Seem and the encore track The Boys Light Up. Reyne wished everyone a Merry Christmas and the show was over.
