Crooked ColoursFollowing the release of their debut album Vera, Aussie trio Crooked Colours hit Fremantle for the last Australian stop of their world tour, saturating the intimate venue with waves of feel-good vibes and treating the audience to an unrelenting set of dancefloor-melting numbers.
Kicking off their set 15 minutes later than scheduled - allowing each last pocket of the dancefloor to be entirely engulfed - the three lads dived into bouncy renditions of Plymouth and Running Blind, before frontman Philip Slabber delivered a sentimental performance of Come Back To You for the group's hometown audience: "This is the last show of the tour… it's great to be back Perth."
The crowd was then sent into a mini-frenzy as Slabber introduced the next song, I Hope You Get It, a standout from their LP. A brief audio issue that saw the synths cut out mid-song was more than compensated by a vicious solo from drummer Liam Merrett-Park and some neat uplifting synths by Leon De Baughn on the KORG.
The set momentarily came to a halt, after the three-piece 'closed' with their biggest hit to date, Flow, before returning to the stage to perform two more tracks. This encore saw Slabber interchange between a beer and a tambourine while delivering a stellar recital of their six-minute album closer, Perfect Run - a song described as "very, very special" to the three of them.
The group's unique indie-electronic sound, taking from a variety of genres, was on full display for the night, featuring the obscure slithering crescendos of tracks like Vera, the heavy, roof-lifting synths of Shine On, and the indie-rock/deep house fusion heard on Show Me. Despite this apparent mishmash of musical expanses, at no point of the night did the band's sound seem confused or incoherent, with Slabber's versatile, sultry vocals able to effortlessly ride the various tempos and rhythms.
