A frivolous night filled with four epic acts
The evening filled Kings Park with a frivolous atmosphere as four epic acts played the Summer Tour 2015.
Showcasing his wonderful songwriting, Jarryd James’ vocals shone as they carried across the park with their mix of falsetto crooning and R’n’B-influenced rhythms. The trio Little May brought out some relaxed vibes with their soft dynamic folk and to-die-for three-part harmonies.
Their first concert since the departure of bassist Jeremy Kelshaw, Cloud Control’s new bassist, referred to as Robbo, had the knack for the part, singing the iconic choreographed harmonies and bashing out tasty bass lines. The four played through hits from their latest album, Dream Cave, including Promises and Scar, and even pulled out Hollow Drums.
From a dark stage emerged a company of musicians to accompany Angus and Julia Stone. They started out with Heart Beats Slow, a familiar tune to set everyone on a high. Their fortuitous organising skills landed them the first beautiful night after four days of straight thunderstorms and rain. Julia eventually greeted the crowd, going on to talk about the song For You, involving her previous love for a man… boy… guy… one of those. She sent the song to him and had the crowd laughing when she mentioned that he reciprocated with an unexpectedly heavy metal song for her. Julia played a very eerie folk rendition of You’re The One That I Want from favourite childhood musical, Grease. The overdrive and heavy reverb on the lap steel certainly took the cake for the most intense-sounding instrument on the night, alongside Julia’s trumpet solo - the pair always put on a good show with their strange mannerisms and intimate performances. The lighting rig really drove the show when necessary with crazy circular lights that have smaller circles within the circles... in the circles. The two certainly knew how to build a song naturally from slow and sombre to texturally rich and dynamic. In good taste they bring back Cloud Control, Little May and Jarryd James to play a very genuine cover of Rock It by Little Red, which they claimed to have just organised during sound-check. Finishing with Goodbye Santa Monica Dream, some lady screamed out a prolonged ‘I love you’ while the rest of the crowd was being mesmerised by the absolute silence in the moment. Other fans showed they’ve had a great night by getting up and dancing.
