The late Birthday Party guitarist and renowned solo musician is being recognised with a landmark in his honour

A previously unnamed laneway in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda has been officially dubbed Rowland S Howard Lane by the Office Of Geographic Names, it has been revealed.

Although theMusic.com.au reached out, we were unable to obtain comment from the Office Of Geographic Names and the City Of Port Phillip Council due to deadline restrictions, a local resident congratulated those involved on a public Twitter feed this afternoon, which has since been made private.

"As of today, Rowland S Howard Lane in St Kilda is official," the original tweet read. "No sign yet, but has been gazetted. Congrats to all who fought the good fight!"

As the resident also explained, the lane in question runs between Jackson Street and Eildon Road, "close to where Rowland used to live", and marks a hard-fought victory for the grass-roots campaign to see the previously nameless thoroughfare given its due moniker.

Rowland S Howard was a synonymous figure with St Kilda, rising to prominence with local post-punk outfit The Birthday Party, as well as These Immortal Souls, before going on to enjoy a storied solo career. His final release, 2009's Pop Crimes, was released in the months leading up to his death from liver cancer.
