Dua Lipa just wrapped five sold-out nights at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, and over the weekend, she did something she hadn’t yet done on her Australian run: welcomed special guests.
Throughout all five of her Radical Optimism dates in Melbourne, the British singer-songwriter performed a “surprise song.” For each show, she played a different hit song by an Australian artist.
She started off with a rock and roll classic, covering AC/DC’s Highway To Hell. She then covered Torn, which featured on Natalie Imbruglia’s 1997 album, Left Of The Middle. That was a cover in itself—the song was written in 1991 and initially released by Lis Sørensen in her native Danish in 1993, before US rock outfit Ednaswap covered it in 1995. The following year, Trine Rein took it to the top ten in Norway with her own version, before Imbruglia made it a global hit in 1997.
After taking on Torn, Lipa covered Kylie Minogue’s eternal hit, Can’t Get You Out Of My Head. Over the weekend, instead of merely covering songs, she welcomed special guests Troye Sivan on Saturday (22 March) and Vance Joy on Sunday (23 March) and performed with them.
On Saturday, Sivan joined Lipa, and the pair performed his song Rush and showcased the song’s unforgettable dance. While heading to the audience at the barrier, Lipa also gave a USB to a fan and asked if they’d “leak” a remix of her song Physical, starring Sivan.
On Sunday, Joy played the ukulele as he and Lipa performed his 2013 hit, Riptide. Lipa described the track as one of her “favourite songs.”

With her Melbourne shows complete, Lipa will head to Sydney this week for three sold-out nights at Qudos Bank Arena. She will perform on Wednesday (26 March), Friday (28 March), and Saturday (29 March).
Reviewing Lipa’s recent Melbourne show, The Music’s Monique La Terra wrote, “The show closed with Houdini, a bold, shimmering anthem with an assertive bassline that sounded even better live, leaving the audience with a lasting sense of empowerment. In fact, the entire night was a lesson in harnessing one’s power, with Lipa’s performance fuelling a confidence that lingered long after the final note.”
