Muse ProfileEnglish rockers Muse have found themselves forced to move to new digs on social media, and it's all thanks to Meta's new AI tool of the same name.
Launched this week, the new Muse agent boasts the ability to "answer questions, complete tasks, browse the web, make purchases, generate images, create documents" and pretty much operate in the same way that any other AI assistant would be able to do.
One thing it can't do, however, is write, record, and release over 30 years’ worth of acclaimed rock music. That task is instead left up to the band Muse.
However, if you were to head along to the social media accounts for the group – previously located at the likes of @muse – you'll instead find the nascent AI agent located therein.
Indeed, Muse have found themselves relegated to the likes of @MuseBand on Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter), wherein many of the comments on recent posts are critical of Meta's decision to boot the band from their former handles.
Currently, neither Muse or Meta have publicly commented on the matter, but it appears to have been in the works for a while.
According to folks on Reddit, the band's Instagram change first occurred back in June, while The Independent noted there had been movement in July. However, the launch of the Muse agent this week has now seen the previously-unoccupied @muse accounts now promoting AI content in its place.
Of course, there's a large amount of irony in the fact that the group have been displaced by an AI service. After all, in 2018, the group's track Algorithm saw vocalist and guitarist Matt Bellamy ruminating on the topic, singing, "Burn like a slave/churn like a cog/we are caged in simulations/algorithms evolve/push us aside and render us obsolete".
Muse released their latest album, The Wow! Signal, in June, and have been on the road in support of the record. Currently, there's no word when they'll be returning to Australia for the first time since 2017.
