“It's about calling in what you want and not focusing on the lower-level things that try to seduce us and keep us playing small.”

Gold Coast based queer icon, TRILLA, is back - this time with an energetic “spell-casting love song”, Slipstream. Known for being a show-stopping opening act, you may recognise TRILLA from her slots supporting Tones and I, Busby Marou, Iluka, Sarah McLeod, and Felipe Baldomir. But now, she’s stepping out on her own, releasing a high intensity track, sure to get the party going. And, to celebrate today’s release of Slipstream, TRILLA is telling The Music all about it.

Tell us about Slipstream - what's it about?

Slipstream is a spell-casting love song about being in a flow state and living the life of your dreams with your love by your side. It's filled with so much energy and aliveness. It's playful and audacious. It's about calling in what you want and not focusing on the lower-level things that try to seduce us and keep us playing small. The 'Slipstream' is ease-ful, synchronistic, and things manifest immediately when you're in the 'Slipstream', baby.

Is there anyone in particular who inspired or influenced the track?

My honey, Tani, kept talking about the 'Slipstream' and what we experience when we are in flow. She's my muse a lot of the time, and I love vibin' with her and riffing on Quantum philosophy. I was on the table getting a spinal adjustment when the song came through me. You aren't supposed to have phones in the room, but I reached down and turned on my voice recorder to capture the flow of lyrics coming to me. I finished writing the verses and chorus on the drive home. Then, one night, on the way to one of my single launches, we created the lyrics to the bridge together and decided to call in all the deliciously fancy things (most of which have come true since writing it). I love that songs can do that. We really do cast spells with our words.

How was it filming the promotional video for it? Looks hectic and fun!

It was so much FUN! The people in the video had no idea it was happening until 5 minutes before we filmed it. We were in a penthouse that we hired out for Tani's 40th. She is a burlesque dancer and wanted to have someone come and perform for us, so we hired Cha Cha Bang. The snippets in the video are from her routine, and she had wads of $100 bills with Tani printed on them and shot them all over the place with her money guns. We wanted everyone to have a high-end experience and indulge in luxury. The outfits were Gatsby-themed, and coincidentally, everyone was colour-coordinated. I played the song for everyone for the first time, and then we all vibed out to it for 1 hour of filming.

Tell us about Spell Song!

Spell Song is an interactive concert that focuses on people coming together to sing, dance and fully express themselves. I called it a ceremonial rock show. It's a drug/alcohol-free event that fuses a music concert, a song circle, an ecstatic dance and a sound healing. The main intention is for people to come to a safe place where they can fully express themselves however that wants to come through. Everyone has their own nest set up in the circle that they can retreat to at any time. I wanted to share how profound and powerful it is when words are intentionally sung. I even have a song I released called The Spell Song, a theme song for these events.

What's it like being a queer artist in the Gold Coast - is there a sense of community?

I've always felt very supported here on the Gold Coast as a queer artist. I had a whole revelation around it when I released Woman in 2023. It felt like I was coming out all over again through my declarations in my music. I think the Gold Coast is such a diverse city, and people are celebrated for being uniquely themselves here. I have never felt like there is much of a queer scene here, so the sense of community I have experienced has been more about inclusivity for all.

What's next for you?

My energy and attention this year are all on the bigger picture of reaching millions of people with my music medicine. I am about to do the Slipstream Tour, which kicks off on Feb 7th, playing Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay and Melbourne. Slipstream will be my 20th song release in the last 2 years, and an EP will follow. Then, I will continue to release music and hold the vision for my grand dreams to materialise.

‘Slipstream’ is out now on all streaming platforms. To celebrate its release, TRILLA is going on tour. Find dates and more information below.
