They nine-inch-nailed it
“Why would I have ever thought those dudes could keep it together?”
That's the message Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor put out on Twitter today following this morning's news that explosive experimental hip-hop outfit Death Grips were calling it quits.
In their scrawled resignation letter, Death Grips indicated that the realisation they were “at their best” led to the decision to dissolve the band, and although they will still release their forthcoming double album, The Powers That B, they've pulled the plug on all scheduled live performances – including a planned support slot with Nine Inch Nails on tour.
sorry everyone… why would I have ever thought those dudes could keep it together?

Death Grips have had a long and storied relationship with tours and performing and, well, not doing it. A cursory glance around the internet will reveal to you that no-shows were something of a regular occurrence for the volatile act, who once clashed with their own label over leaking their own album online.

Perhaps no place that Death Grips were supposed to perform in the next few months has been slapped in the face worse than the US' Fun Fun Fun Fest, on which Death Grips has bailed previously, and which made it known that, even if Death Grips decide to change their mind and get back together, they're no longer welcome at their event.
“We are now at our super best and so our relationship with Death Grips is finally over — we have decide to consciously uncouple forever, after being stood up twice at the altar, we had to look deep into our soul and ask if Death Grips really loves us or is capable of loving anyone, and the unfortunate answer is 'no.',” the festival wrote on a scrunched-up napkin, of which they took a photo and posted to Facebook, mirroring Death Grips' less-than-professional choice of medium to communicate their split.

– and Pitchfork Festival, with Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber tweeting that he had a “weird feeling” Death Grips wouldn't make it to his event.

However, Toronto's TIME Festival – at which Death Grips were due to appear in under a fortnight alongside Grimes, Aussie luminary Flume and Iggy Azalea collaborator Charli XCX – is yet to respond to the fresh vacancy on their line-up.
