And a well deserved win at that.

More Tim Minchin More Tim Minchin

Australian comedian Tim Minchin has been rewarded for his critically acclaimed performance in ABC's The Secret River by picking up the award for Most Outstanding Supporting Actor at the 2016 Logie Awards last night and the actor used the opportunity to send a message to the public about the show's content.

Set in 1805, The Secret River gives a look into the colonisation of Australia and the conflict between indigenous communities and white settlers.

"I think it's incredibly important that we keep telling the story of the true history of Australia," Minchin said in a recorded message.

"It's extremely complicated and painful and it's hard to know how to tell a story respectfully and how to make sure we amplify the right voices.

"'Let's get over it and move on' doesn't cut it and never has in any culture in the history of the world."

The 40-year-old comic and musician was already in with a good chance for the gong, having been nominated for a second time in the same category for his work in the Stan-screened comedy series No Activity.

Meanwhile, The Secret River also won the award for Most Outstanding Miniseries or Telemovie.

Minchin made headlines in February with the release of a song targeted at Cardinal George Pell, in which he slammed Australia's highest ranking Catholic as a "coward" for declining to return to Australia to give evidence of sexual abuse in the Church to the Royal Commission.

The track garnered over one million views within weeks of its release, as well taking out the #1 spot on the Australian iTunes Songs chart.
