Traversing the journey of pop music from ABBA to Zapp, this brand new Netflix series is a must-see for all music lovers.
A brand new series focusing on pop music and starring some of music's biggest names is set to hit Netflix tomorrow.
Showcasing a deep dive into the world of pop music spanning the last several decades, the This Is Pop docuseries, a brainchild of Netflix and Banger Films, is set to offer the ultimate love letter to the beloved genre, with the eight-part Netflix series officially releasing tomorrow, Tuesday 22 June.
Each episode of the new series features a different director, focusing in on specific eras of pop music, ranging from early protest music to the Britpop boom and beyond, and features the likes of Brandi Carlile, T-Pain, Steve Earle, Chuck D and Shania Twain, as well as Men At Work's very own Colin Hay in an episode titled Festival Rising.
Already armed with their award-winning series Hip Hop Evolution, the creators at Banger Films knew early on that the journey into the world of pop would be an entirely different beast to tackle, with origin stories as far as the eyes could see and a non-linear structure looming in the early phases.
Rather than attempt to traverse the chronological pathway of the pop realms, the creators instead sought to utilise standalone moments in the history of the genre, from the late '50s when Elvis Presley first smouldered onto the scene, to the ground-breaking ripples of Boyz II Men on the future of boy bands, auto-tune, Swedish producers and the unexplored classism of Britpop earlier on.
“We started with the question ‘What is Pop?’, and found answers we never expected,” said producer Amanda Burt in a statement.

“It’s more than the charts or what floats out of a car radio. It’s a perfect time capsule of how people were living as it was made and how they danced, loved, and cried as it was heard.”
This Is Pop will be available to stream on Netflix as of Tuesday 22 June. Check out the trailer below.
