The passing of Liam Payne, and the global phenomenon that was Taylor Swift's Eras tour helped shape this year's Google search results.

“How old is Taylor Swift?” is just one of the many questions that Aussies searched for the most throughout 2024, according to the new results shared by Google.
While the world is still getting over the excitement and discussion inspired by the launch of Spotify Wrapped and other end-of-year data dumps, tech giants Goole have gone deep into their own repository of data to share with the world just what Aussies have looked for the most.
As one would expect, the vast majority of results are related to sports, with the likes of 'Olympic medal tally', 'T20 World Cup', and 'Wheelchair tennis Paralympics' featuring throughout the top ten. Likewise, politics is a big trend, with 'US election' expectedly topping the list.
However, for the music-lovers amongst us, it's a mix of big names and ticketing, with names such as 'Liam Payne' and 'Taylor Swift' appearing alongside 'Ticketek marketplace’. Of course, all of these are relatively expected for anyone who has paid attention to the music world this year.
As Google notes, questions such as “How did Liam Payne die” featured prominently following the One Direction star’s unexpected October passing, and “How old is Taylor Swift” presumably spiked following her Eras tour touching down in Melbourne and Sydney in February.

On the entertainment front, Swift tops the top ten searches for global figures (beating out Donald Trump), which also boasts figures such as Travis Scott and P Diddy. Notably, Swift’s partner – Travis Kelce – also appears at the #6 position.
Similarly, Payne is the top search for those who have left us this year. Searches for his name in the wake of his untimely passing is also accompanied by Michael Mosley, Maggie Smith, and Jesse Baird. Fellow musician Toby Keith also appears in the top ten, wedged at #9 between James Earl Jones and Carl Weathers.
While most of the entertainment section is in fact dominated by movies this year, the world of music has also extended into the world of DIY and how-to for Google’s search results. In fact alongside questions such as 'how to mew', 'how to talk to women', and 'how to turn off Meta AI', it turns out Aussies were very keen to learn 'how to make Taylor Swift friendship bracelets' – again, likely ahead of the global phenomenon that was the Era tour.
